How do essential oils affect emotions?

Life is filled with ups and downs, often having us experiencing a full range of emotions on a daily basis, sometimes without us even realising. Essential oils can play an important role in balancing and supporting these emotions and bringing us back to centre.

When essential oils are absorbed through the skin, they enter the bloodstream which distributes the healing molecules throughout the body. When inhaling an essential oil, the aromatic molecules travel through two routes. Through the nasal passages, stimulating smell sense memory in the limbic system of the brain. In the lungs, essential oils pass into the blood stream and again, are carried throughout the body. The limbic system is a primitive part of the brain that associates scent with memory and emotional response. This is why certain aromas can produce powerful memories and affect our emotional state. Once the limbic system is triggered, neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins are released.

Here are some of our tips:

Encourage Positive Energy

When we’re acting from a place of happiness, positivity and light, everything feels easier and more enjoyable. When we choose to look for the good in all situations and people, we unconsciously attract more of that goodness into our life; likewise when we focus on the bad, that’s what we’re going to welcome in.

To help maintain a positive mood, fresh, light, citrus oils are the best choice. Try vaporising Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Tangerine or Bergamot in your home or workplace.

Help Depression

When we’re feeling down it can be really difficult to look at the situation objectively and shake the feeling. Acknowledging the reason we’re feeling down is a great first step to understanding the temporary nature of the feeling, and moving back towards the sunshine. Essential oils can also support you in getting back on your feet.

Essential oils such as ECO. Anxiety Blend, Lavender and Clary Sage will all help to create a calm and nurturing atmosphere to let go of those feelings. Try adding a few drops of these oils to a relaxing bath.

Stimulate Creativity & Focus

Sometimes inspiration and ideas just seem to evade us, no matter how hard we try. There are certain essential oils that will help refresh the mind and reduce mental fatigue, making space for your amazing creativity to shine through.

Try vaporising Frankincense, Lime or Rosemary to help reset your thoughts and refresh your thinking.

Release Anger

Anger can be quite debilitating and stop us from moving forward with our lives in extreme instances. If you’re suffering from anger, annoyance or frustration, essential oils can help to release these feelings and maintain a calm nature.

Try diffusing a few drops of Patchouli or Peppermint in a vaporiser when you can feel a temper of frustration coming on.

Clarity of the Mind

We’re all busy, and it’s not surprising that most of us don’t find, or prioritise the time to find, many spare moments in the day to act from a place of stillness and clarity. Essential oils can be incorporated into your daily routine to help find some mental clarity and increase mindfulness.

Some of the most effective essential oils for connecting with this inner consciousness are Lemon, Rosemary,Melissaand Petitgrain.
