Benefits of peppermint essential oil

Uplifting

Invigorating and stimulating, peppermint essential oil refreshes us from fatigue and apathy. Gifting us with a fresh outlook, peppermint helps clear the mind and promote mental and emotional clarity. Take a few inhalations straight from the bottle or add a few drops to your diffuser to increase energy in the morning or to promote concentration throughout the day.

Eases minor headaches

Menthol, one of the key compound found in peppermint essential oil, has an analgesic and cooling action that can help ease headaches. For the relief of a minor headache mix 1 – 2 drops of peppermint oil in a small amount of carrier oil and massage into your neck and shoulders. The crisp cool scent will help you energize and re-focus, so you can get on with your day.

Relieves muscle aches

Peppermint is both cooling and heating and makes a wonderful analgesic remedy for tired and aching muscles. It's a lymphatic stimulant that can be incorporated for treatment of water retention and swelling. To a bowl of water add 2 drops of essential oil. To treat inflammation or to cool down, use cold to room temperature water, for aching tight muscles use warm to hot water. Soak a wash cloth in the water, wring out excess moisture and apply the wash cloth to the affected area, repeat two or three times.

Helps clear congestion

Peppermint oil is an expectorant and used to clear a blocked nose and congested lungs. Steam inhalation is beneficial to the respiratory system. Add 1 drop of essential oil to a bowl of steaming hot water for steam inhalation. Caution due to risk of burns or scalding and keep eyes covered during treatment as peppermint steam may cause irritation

Supports digestion

Perhaps most famously prized as a digestive tonic, peppermint oil has anti-spasmodic, analgesic and carminative properties and is helpful for painful digestion, nausea, wind, irritable bowel syndrome and intestinal spasming. For massage application use a 1% dilution; 20 drops per 100mls carrier oil maximum. Peppermint has a strong aroma and powerful effect therefore a small number of drops is enough to provide therapeutic effect. Note that we do not recommend digesting this oil. Essential oils should not be taken internally unless you have consulted with a health professional or aromatherapist first.

Treats skin conditions

Peppermint essential oil has a cooling action and in very low dilutions can be useful in the treatment of sunburn, rashes and itchy skin.

Avoid during pregnancy and is not recommended for babies and small children. Peppermint oil is an antidote to homeopathic remedies and should be avoided during homeopathic treatment.
